Planning an Aulani trip is different from planning a theme park trip. There's no Lightning Lane strategy to develop, no dining window to wake up for at 6 AM. But there are things you should know to get the most out of your time in Ko Olina, and there are decisions that can meaningfully affect your experience and budget. Here's the guide I share with families planning Aulani for the first time.
Choosing Your Room
Standard hotel rooms vs. vacation club villas
Aulani is a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) property, which means a significant portion of the resort consists of DVC villas, larger units with kitchen facilities. These can be booked by anyone, not just DVC members. For families planning to stay 5+ nights, a studio or 1-bedroom villa with a kitchen can dramatically reduce food costs, breakfast and some dinners prepared in your room instead of at resort prices.
Room location matters
Aulani is a large property. Rooms closer to the pool complex are most convenient for families with young children. Ocean view and partial ocean view rooms provide stunning views of the Pacific. Lagoon view rooms overlook the Ko Olina Lagoon system and are beautiful without full ocean premium pricing.
When to Go
Hawaii's weather is remarkably consistent year-round, warm, sunny, with occasional rain. A few timing considerations:
- December–March: Whale watching season. Humpback whales are visible from Aulani's beach during this period. Slightly higher chance of rain on the windward side (Ko Olina is on the dry western side, so less affected).
- Summer (June–August): Peak season. Higher rates and more crowded. Ocean conditions are calmer, ideal for snorkeling and water activities.
- September–November: Lower rates, manageable crowds, excellent weather. One of my favorite windows to recommend for Aulani.
Activities Beyond the Pool
Aulani offers a rich activity program that many families underuse:
- 'Aulani Aunties programming: Daily Hawaiian cultural activities, hula lessons, Hawaiian art classes, storytelling, and craft workshops. These are among the most unique experiences at the resort and completely free to participate in.
- Rainbow Reef snorkel lagoon: The private snorkel area is $25/adult and $15/child per day. Worth it, especially for families with kids old enough to snorkel comfortably (typically 7+).
- Lu'au at Ka Wa'a: A traditional Hawaiian lu'au dinner experience with performances, fire dancers, and a buffet dinner. Requires advance reservations. An excellent special evening.
- Boat tours and excursions from Ko Olina: Several operators offer snorkel tours, whale watching (seasonal), and dolphin encounters from the Ko Olina Marina. These book up quickly, reserve in advance.
Exploring Beyond Aulani
Ko Olina is about 27 miles from Honolulu and 35 minutes from Waikiki. Aulani families who want to explore O'ahu have excellent day trip options:
- Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial and the entire Pearl Harbor Historic Sites complex is about 20 minutes from Ko Olina. A profound and important historical experience.
- Polynesian Cultural Center: About 30 minutes from Ko Olina on the North Shore. A full-day cultural experience celebrating the cultures of Polynesia, excellent for families.
- North Shore: World-famous surfing beaches (Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach), famous shave ice shops, and farm stands. A beautiful day trip.
- Honolulu/Waikiki: Shopping, restaurants, the Bishop Museum, and the Honolulu Zoo.
Dining Strategy
Aulani has excellent food, but eating every meal at the resort adds up fast. My recommendation for families staying 6–7 nights: buy a week's worth of breakfast supplies (fruit, yogurt, pastries) at a nearby Costco or Foodland grocery, book 2–3 resort dinners at 'AMA'AMA and Makahiki for the special experiences, and explore the Ko Olina restaurants and nearby grocery-adjacent options for the rest. Roy's Ko Olina and Paradise Cove offer excellent nearby dining.
