Aulani Disney Resort Review: Is It Worth the Cost?

Aulani Disney Resort Hawaii

Aulani is the most underrated Disney vacation. I say that as someone who has planned over 100 Disney trips and watched families return from Aulani more relaxed, more recharged, and more enthusiastic than almost any other Disney destination. It's not a theme park trip. It's a Hawaii vacation with Disney's touch on every single detail, and that combination is genuinely extraordinary.

What Is Aulani?

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa is a beachfront resort on the western shore of O'ahu, Hawaii, about 27 miles from Honolulu in the Ko Olina resort area. It opened in 2011 and represents Disney's only resort that isn't attached to a theme park. There are no rides, no castle, no fireworks show. What there is: a stunning 21-acre property with direct beach access, one of the best resort pool complexes in Hawaii, authentic Hawaiian culture woven throughout every experience, character meet-and-greets on the beach, and Disney's signature attention to detail applied to a tropical resort.

The Pool Complex: The Heart of Aulani

Aulani's pool complex is extraordinary and represents a significant portion of why families come back. Key elements:

Character Experiences at Aulani

This is what separates Aulani from every other luxury resort in Hawaii. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and other characters appear on the beach and around the resort in special Hawaiian-themed costumes and outfits. 'Aulani Aunties and Uncles (Disney's name for the resort's Hawaiian cultural ambassadors) interact with guests and share authentic Hawaiian stories, music, and hula throughout the day. Disney also offers scheduled character breakfast experiences and evening programming.

The Beach

Aulani has direct access to Kohola Lagoon, a calm, protected beach area that's excellent for swimming with families. The ocean can be more active on certain days, but the lagoon provides a safe, calm swimming area for kids. Ko Olina's overall beach park system has several beautiful beaches, Aulani guests have access to all of them.

Is Aulani Worth It?

Aulani is expensive. Room rates start around $500/night and go significantly higher for villas and suites. A week at Aulani for a family of 4, including flights from the mainland, can run $6,000–$12,000+. So is it worth it?

Here's my honest answer: Aulani is worth it for families who want a beach vacation with the Disney experience and aren't necessarily looking for a theme park trip. If your dream Disney vacation is riding Space Mountain and seeing the fireworks over Cinderella Castle, go to Disney World first. If your dream vacation is a beautiful Hawaiian resort where your kids are in a magical environment and you're genuinely relaxed on a beach, Aulani delivers that in a way no other resort in Hawaii can.

The families I've helped plan Aulani trips almost universally return saying it was the most relaxed Disney vacation they've ever had. That's the experience it's designed to deliver. And for the right family at the right time, it's absolutely worth every penny.
