5 days is the most common Disney World trip length for first-time families. Long enough to see all four parks, short enough to keep travel budgets reasonable. Here's the exact 5-day plan I build for first-time clients. No frills, no gaps, all priorities covered.
Day 1: Magic Kingdom
The dream park goes first. Save the most iconic experience for when energy is highest.
- 7:00 AM: Book Lightning Lane Multi Pass. First selection: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
- Rope drop arrival: 30 minutes before official opening.
- Morning rides: Seven Dwarfs, Space Mountain, Big Thunder, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean.
- Lunch: Pecos Bill or Cosmic Ray's. Sit-down dining at Magic Kingdom is hard to book on day 1.
- Resort break: 1 to 4 PM. Don't skip this.
- Evening return: Ride remaining priorities, watch Happily Ever After fireworks.
Day 2: Animal Kingdom
A naturally slower-paced park is the perfect day 2. You're tired from Magic Kingdom; Animal Kingdom doesn't demand the same energy.
- 7:00 AM: Book Avatar Flight of Passage on Multi Pass.
- Rope drop: Kilimanjaro Safari first, animals are most active early.
- Morning: Flight of Passage, Na'vi River Journey, Expedition Everest.
- Lunch: Satu'li Canteen in Pandora.
- Afternoon: Festival of the Lion King show.
- Evening: Resort dinner. Animal Kingdom closes earlier than other parks.
Day 3: EPCOT
A walking, eating, exploring day. The energy reset before the busiest park.
- 7:00 AM: Buy Guardians of the Galaxy Single Pass early.
- Rope drop: Frozen Ever After or Test Track.
- Morning: Soarin', Living with the Land, The Seas.
- Lunch: Start eating around World Showcase. Best food in Disney.
- Afternoon: Continue through World Showcase. Stop at La Cava del Tequila in Mexico for the parents.
- Evening: Watch EPCOT's nighttime fireworks show. Best viewing from UK pavilion.
Day 4: Hollywood Studios
The thrill-ride day. Plan for high energy from start to finish.
- 7:00 AM: Book Slinky Dog Dash on Multi Pass. Try for Rise of the Resistance Single Pass.
- Rope drop: Rise of the Resistance.
- Morning: Slinky Dog Dash, Millennium Falcon, Tower of Terror, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster.
- Lunch: Ronto Roasters in Galaxy's Edge or sit-down at Sci-Fi Dine-In (if booked).
- Afternoon: Walk through Galaxy's Edge slowly, build a lightsaber if budget allows.
- Evening: Stay for Fantasmic show.
Day 5: Favorite Park or Park Hop
The flex day. Either return to your family's favorite park, or use Park Hopper to hit your favorite rides across two parks.
- Morning: Revisit Magic Kingdom favorites with shorter waits during early hours.
- Afternoon: Park hop to EPCOT for World Showcase or to Hollywood Studios for one more Galaxy's Edge visit.
- Evening: One last fireworks show. Magic Kingdom is the classic choice for the final night.
What This Itinerary Doesn't Include
I deliberately left out: water parks (skip them on a 5-day first trip), Disney Springs (too time-consuming for a tight schedule), and any "rest day" (5 days is too short for one).
Total Cost Estimate (Family of 4)
- Moderate resort (5 nights): $1,600
- 5-day tickets: $1,900
- Lightning Lane (4 days): $400
- Dining (mix of counter + 2 table): $1,200
- Extras: $300
- Total: approximately $5,400
