If you're visiting Disney World between May and October, which is most visiting families, it will probably rain. Florida afternoon thunderstorms are almost daily from June through September. The good news: a rainy day at Disney World isn't a ruined day. If you know how to handle it, a rainy afternoon can actually be the most productive park time of your entire trip.
What to Pack for Rain
The single most important preparation: buy ponchos before you go. Disney's ponchos cost $15 each at the parks. Amazon sells packs of 10 for the same price. A family of four in disposable ponchos can keep moving through the rain without interruption. Umbrellas work too but are harder in crowds and during rides. A small, packable rain jacket per adult is even better for longer-lasting rain.
Waterproof phone pouches are worth having, your phone is your Disney World lifeline and getting it completely soaked during a sudden downpour is a bad day.
The Counterintuitive Truth About Rain
When it starts raining at Disney World, a significant percentage of guests either go back to their resort or pack into covered areas and indoor attractions. This means outdoor queues, even for popular attractions, drop dramatically during and immediately after rain. I've seen 60-minute waits on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train drop to under 20 minutes during a rain shower simply because guests moved indoors.
The families in ponchos who keep moving during rain are the ones who ride the most in a single day.
The Best Rainy-Day Strategy by Park
Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom has the most indoor attractions of any park. During heavy rain: Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, "it's a small world," Space Mountain, and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin all have minimal outdoor queuing. The Country Bear Jamboree and Carousel of Progress (usually low-priority for most families) have virtually no lines during rain and are genuinely fun with dry seats.
EPCOT
World Showcase pavilions have extensive covered and indoor spaces, perfect for a long lunch or shopping browse during heavy rain. The pavilion interiors are excellent to explore in detail during rain, and most families rush through them on nice days. Soarin' Around the World and Living with the Land are fully indoor. The Mission Space complex has extensive indoor queue areas.
Hollywood Studios
Galaxy's Edge has limited cover, but the Millennium Falcon exterior queue area has some canopy. Rise of the Resistance, Tower of Terror, and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster are all indoor. A rainy Hollywood Studios day is often a productive day.
Animal Kingdom
The most challenging park in rain because of the extensive outdoor theming. Festival of the Lion King is fully covered. Na'vi River Journey and Avatar Flight of Passage are indoor. The Safari vehicle has partial canopy, some families actually enjoy the safari in rain when animals are more active in cooler temperatures.
Afternoon Thunderstorms: The Pattern to Know
Florida's summer rain follows a remarkably predictable pattern. Storms build during the hottest part of the afternoon (typically 2 PM–5 PM) and usually clear within 45–90 minutes. Plan your day knowing that a late-afternoon rain is likely, use that time for indoor attractions or a resort return, and be ready to hit the parks again at 5 PM when outdoor areas are dripping, uncrowded, and gloriously cool after the rain.
