Disneyland is the most compact and immediately accessible major Disney destination. What takes a full week to experience at Walt Disney World can be accomplished meaningfully in 2–3 days at Disneyland. But "easier" doesn't mean "no planning required", the parks still get very crowded, dining reservations still fill up fast, and Lightning Lane strategy still matters. Here's everything first-timers need to know.
Understanding the Two Parks
Disneyland Resort consists of two parks:
- Disneyland Park: The original, opened in 1955 by Walt Disney himself. Magic Kingdom-style classics, Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, with several original attractions Walt personally oversaw. The most historically significant Disney park in the world.
- Disney California Adventure (DCA): The newer park built on what was once Disneyland's parking lot. Home to Cars Land (one of the best-themed lands in any Disney park), Radiator Springs Racers (the marquee attraction), and Pixar Pier with Incredicoaster.
Both parks are on the same property, separated by the Downtown Disney district. Walking between them takes less than 10 minutes. Park Hopper tickets allow you to visit both on the same day.
Getting There and Where to Stay
Disneyland is in Anaheim, California, about 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles. If you're flying, John Wayne Airport (SNA) is the closest at about 15 minutes. LAX is larger with more flights but about 45–60 minutes away without traffic.
Staying on-site vs. off-site
Disneyland has three official on-site hotels: the Disneyland Hotel, Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel. The Grand Californian is the standout, a beautiful arts-and-crafts lodge with a door that opens directly into Disney California Adventure, making it the only resort with this private park access. On-site guests also get Extra Magic Hour early entry benefits.
Off-site options are more numerous and significantly cheaper. Good Garden Walk and Anaheim have dozens of hotels within walking distance of the resort. Unlike Disney World, Disneyland's smaller footprint makes off-site stays much more practical, you can walk to the parks from hundreds of nearby hotels.
Tickets and Park Reservations
Disneyland uses the same date-based pricing as Disney World. Tickets are tied to specific dates and must be purchased with a park reservation in the Disneyland app. A 1-day, 1-park ticket ranges from roughly $109–$194 depending on date. Multi-day tickets (2-5 days) provide better per-day value.
Park Hopper tickets add $65 per ticket and allow you to visit both parks in a single day. For a 2–3 day trip, I typically recommend Park Hopper, the parks are so close that hopping between them on the same day is easy and enjoyable.
The Must-Do Rides
Disneyland Park
- Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance: Yes, it's here too, identical to the Hollywood Studios version. The most ambitious ride in any Disney park. Book Lightning Lane early.
- Indiana Jones Adventure: One of the best attraction experiences in any Disney park. A Jeep expedition through a cursed temple. Excellent storytelling, great theming, and a rougher ride than you might expect.
- Matterhorn Bobsleds: The original Disney mountain roller coaster, built in 1959. A little rough by modern standards but completely unique and historically significant.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: The original, with a longer boat ride than the Magic Kingdom version and slightly better theming. A Disney classic at its best.
- Haunted Mansion: The original Haunted Mansion, still one of the greatest dark rides ever created.
Disney California Adventure
- Radiator Springs Racers: The best ride at Disneyland Resort. A racing simulation through Cars Land that's beautifully themed and technically impressive. Book Lightning Lane for this first.
- Guardians of the Galaxy, Mission: BREAKOUT!: The DCA version of the Tower of Terror, re-themed around the Guardians. A drop tower with a random sequence set to classic rock. Excellent.
- Incredicoaster: The most intense coaster in the resort. Fast, fun, and entirely outdoors along the waterfront.
- Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure: An interactive shooting ride in the Avengers Campus area. Great for families.
Must-See: Cars Land at Night
Cars Land transforms after dark when the neon lights of Radiator Springs activate. It's one of the most photographed areas in any Disney park and genuinely beautiful. Walk through it even if you've already ridden Radiator Springs Racers. Stay for the neon hour.
Disneyland First-Timer Strategy
- Day 1: Disneyland Park, Rope drop, Indiana Jones and Rise of the Resistance first. LLMP for Pirates and Matterhorn. Evening Fantasmic! show.
- Day 2: Disney California Adventure, Rope drop, Radiator Springs Racers first (the most in-demand ride at DCA). Mission: BREAKOUT! and Incredicoaster in the morning. Cars Land at night.
- Day 3 (if available): Park Hop freely. Hit anything you missed, repeat favorites.
