Disneyland does Halloween differently than Disney World. The atmosphere, the events, and the specific Halloween Time overlays make it a uniquely California Halloween experience. From September through October 31, Disneyland transforms into a Halloween wonderland. Here's everything you need to know.
Halloween Time: Free with Park Admission
Unlike Disney World's MNSSHP (separately ticketed), Disneyland's Halloween Time happens during regular park hours and is free with your normal park ticket. This is a key advantage: you can experience most of the Halloween magic without paying extra.
What's included with regular park admission:
- Halloween decorations throughout Disneyland and Disney California Adventure
- Haunted Mansion Holiday (the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay)
- Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy
- Halloween-themed character meet-and-greets
- The Pumpkin Festival on Main Street, U.S.A.
- Cars Land's "Haul-O-Ween" transformation in Radiator Springs
Haunted Mansion Holiday
The single most beloved Disneyland Halloween Time experience. The Haunted Mansion gets a complete Nightmare Before Christmas overlay from September through January. Jack Skellington, Sally, and the Pumpkin King take over the mansion. The ride is genuinely worth the wait, and is consistently rated as one of the best ride experiences at any Disney park.
Note: Haunted Mansion Holiday has a brief closure in mid-August through early September for the transition from regular Haunted Mansion. Plan accordingly if it's a priority.
Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy
Space Mountain gets a Halloween overlay too. New projections inside the ride add a ghost villain that chases your rocket through space. Different from the regular Space Mountain experience.
Cars Land Haul-O-Ween
Radiator Springs transforms into "Radiator Screams" with cars in costumes, Halloween decorations throughout the land, and special "Mater's Graveyard JamBOOree" experience. Cars Land at Halloween is genuinely beautiful, especially at night.
Oogie Boogie Bash (Separately Ticketed)
Oogie Boogie Bash is Disney California Adventure's separately ticketed Halloween event. Unlike Disney World's Halloween party at the main park, Disneyland's Halloween party is at the second park, DCA, on select nights from late August through Halloween.
What's Included with the Oogie Boogie Bash Ticket
- Treat trails throughout Disney California Adventure (trick-or-treating)
- Frightfully Fun Parade (the Halloween-themed parade)
- Villains' Grove (a Halloween walkthrough experience in Redwood Creek Challenge Trail)
- Mickey's Trick and Treat (a stage show)
- DescenDance (a dance party with villains)
- The Mad T Party
- Free water fountains with chilled water (sounds small, becomes important)
- Park entry from 3 PM (even though party starts at 6 PM)
Oogie Boogie Bash Pricing
- Adults: $135 to $185 depending on night
- Children (3 to 9): Slightly less
- Tickets typically go on sale in spring and sell out quickly for Halloween weekend
Special Disneyland Halloween Character Experiences
Disneyland brings out characters not usually available, in their Halloween costumes:
- Cruella de Vil
- Maleficent
- The Evil Queen
- Hades
- Captain Hook (in pirate costume)
- Jafar
- Mickey, Minnie, Donald in matching Halloween costumes
The Best Halloween Time Strategy
Visit on a non-Bash night for the free Halloween experience
If your budget is tight, you can experience 80% of Disneyland's Halloween magic on any regular park day in October. Save the Oogie Boogie Bash money and visit on a Tuesday or Wednesday for lower crowds.
Combine with a regular DCA day for the Bash
Buy a regular 2-day ticket plus an Oogie Boogie Bash ticket. Do Disneyland on day 1 (for the Haunted Mansion Holiday), and DCA on day 2 leading into the Bash. This is the most efficient Halloween Disneyland trip.
The pin trading is excellent at Halloween
Disney releases special Halloween Time pins each year. Pin trading throughout the park is at peak interest during this season.
Costume Rules
The Oogie Boogie Bash has the same costume rules as Disney World's parties:
- Costumes allowed for all ages during the Bash
- No masks for guests 14 and older
- No weapons or weapon-like props
- Family-friendly only
The Best Time to Visit Halloween Time
- Mid-September through early October: Decorations are up, crowds are lower
- Last week of October: Peak Halloween experience, but high crowds and pricing
- Halloween night itself (October 31): Most expensive, most crowded, but the most atmospheric experience
Why Disneyland Halloween Is Different
Disneyland's Halloween feels different from Disney World's. The smaller park footprint makes the Halloween transformations feel more immersive, every angle has Halloween decorations, every cast member is festive. Cars Land at Halloween is something Disney World simply can't match. And the Oogie Boogie Bash, while expensive, is consistently rated as one of the best Halloween events at any theme park in the world.
