Genie+ vs Lightning Lane Explained: What Changed and What It Means

Genie Plus and Lightning Lane explained

If you've been planning a Disney World trip for the first time, you might be confused about what to actually buy. Genie+? Lightning Lane? FastPass? Disney has changed this system multiple times in the last few years, and the names are confusing. Here's exactly what you need to know in 2026.

Quick History (Why It's Confusing)

The Current System (2026)

Disney now offers two products:

Lightning Lane Multi Pass (LLMP)

What Genie+ used to be. Pay one fee per person per day ($15 to $35 depending on date and park) to access shorter-wait Lightning Lane queues on most popular attractions. You can book one return time at a time and keep booking new ones as you use them or after 2 hours pass.

Lightning Lane Single Pass (LLSP)

What individual Lightning Lane used to be. Pay per ride for the most in-demand attractions that aren't on Multi Pass: Tron Lightcycle Run, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Dynamic pricing, $7 to $25 per ride per person.

What You Should Buy

The decision tree:

Common Misconceptions

"It's just like FastPass+." No. The free FastPass+ system gave you 3 advance bookings up to 60 days out. Lightning Lane is paid, day-of, and rolling.

"It's not worth it." Depends on the day. On a 7/10 crowd day at Magic Kingdom, you'll save 3+ hours of standby waits with LLMP. On a 3/10 day at EPCOT, it's overkill.

"I have to buy it for everyone in my party." Yes. Each person needs their own Lightning Lane purchase to ride.

How a Disney Planner Helps With This

I build a custom Lightning Lane strategy for every client trip based on park days, crowd predictions, and family priorities. The strategy includes which days to buy LLMP, which Single Passes are worth it, the exact booking sequence at 7 AM, and how to maximize the daily booking loop. This level of strategy is what separates families who feel like they wasted money on Lightning Lane from families who felt it was the best money they spent.
